Maintaining Mental Wellness

We are approaching the end of May – Mental Health Awareness Month. While this month has been a great reminder to prioritize our wellbeing, caring for our minds should not stop on June first.

Mental health is equally as important as physical health in achieving overall wellness. When individuals take care of their needs by practicing hobbies, going to therapy and in some cases, taking prescribed medication from a licensed provider, they are often able to function in a happier, calmer and more productive manner, which results in improved communication, stronger relationships and a better mood.

So how can you determine when your mind needs some tending to? It’s not always obvious, as the onset of mental health issues can be slow and subtle. If you notice changes in your daily routine such as a significant increase or decrease in sleep, appetite or hygienic practices, take some time to reflect on the cause. Lack of motivation and productivity are also common signs of depression.

Seeking treatment at the early onset of symptoms is the best way to get in front of mental illness. If you suspect that you are suffering, consult with a licensed professional. Therapeutic work will help determine the root of the problem, alleviate symptoms and find the best coping method for your personal needs.

If you have successfully achieved a healthy mental state, congratulations! Now it is time to work on maintenance. Continue your treatment for a reasonable period of time after your health improves to ensure your mood is stable. Over time you may begin phasing out of treatment in a safe, and gradual way. Keeping up with the methods that work for you even after you end treatment is the best way to carry out a happy, healthy life!

Here at EBC, mental health is our top priority. We encourage you to make it yours as well!
